How to modify the space used by VSS (shadow copy) ?

Use case : how to modify the space used by VSS ?

or how to administrate VSS feature with VSSAdmin ?

We can find on websites, forums… few articles, but I never learn succesfully how to administrate VSS. Maybe I never really need that or some other administrator do that.

Now, I had an issue ! The VSS files on NTFS volumes,  that dedicated partition and monitoring alert all the world !

So we need to moderate the space use.

How ?

This the command line « VSSAdmin » we can check the providers, volumes, shadow already create and change the maximum size for them.

Let me show you :

Providers list

Use this command line to see the providers :

vssadmin list providers

Shadow list

Use this command line to see the shadow list

Vssadmin list volumes

list shadow storage

We can use another command line to see the storage of all our shadows, like this :

vssadmin list shadowstorage

Operations

We can now change the shadows storage size to minimize the space use on the NTFS volume, like this :

vssadmin resize shadowstorage /For=C: /On=C: /MaxSize=16GB
